Counter-Height vs. Standard Dining: Which One Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we hear in the Alasa showroom: should I get a counter-height or a standard dining set? It sounds like a style question, but it is really about how you use your dining space.

Standard height: the classic choice. A standard dining table sits at about 30 inches — the same height as a desk. These tables are versatile. They work for family dinners, homework, board games, and holiday spreads. The chairs fit under most window sills, and the table does not visually dominate the room. If you have a formal dining room or you want your table to be multi-purpose, standard height is the safer pick.

Counter height: the modern entertainer. Counter-height tables sit at about 36 inches — the same height as a kitchen island. They create a more casual, bar-like feel. The taller stance makes the room feel more open because you see more of the floor underneath. Counter-height sets tend to be the center of attention at parties — guests naturally gather around them standing or sitting.

The stool question. Counter-height tables use stools instead of chairs. That is either a feature or a drawback depending on who sits there. Kids and older family members may find stools harder to get in and out of. But for adults, a well-designed stool with a footrest and a back is comfortable for a full dinner. Try both in the showroom — the difference is immediate once you sit down.

The kitchen connection. If your dining area is open to the kitchen, a counter-height table can bridge the two spaces — especially if you have a kitchen island at the same height. It makes the whole great room feel like one continuous surface, which is one of the reasons counter-height has become so popular in open-concept homes.
